On October 2th, 2019, after the president of Ecuador Lenin Moreno, announced a series of economic measures to placate the crisis in which the country is. A large part of the population turned to the streets to demonstrate against the decree that, among other measures, eliminated the fuel subsidy. This economic policy would alter the ways of life of the less privileged sectors. For these reasons the indigenous communities that are also the most impoverished, along with other social sectors such as transport, workers, and students. They protested for 13 days in the streets.

By the 4th the day a congregation of several communities was established in the emblematic Arbolito Park. The confrontations between police and protesters, the looting in some sectors of the country and the confrontation of the whole society, plunged the country into a great uncertainty that concluded with the repeal of the decree. The protests that left 11 dead and great social discontent.

This was a demonstration in which women and the community took a very important role. For me, it was essential to understand this protest not only from the battle line but from the internal strength of those who exercise their very legitimate right to protest.

El 2 de octubre de 2019, después de que el presidente de Ecuador, Lenin Moreno, anunciara una serie de medidas económicas para aplacar la crisis en la que se encuentra el país. Una gran parte de la población se dirigió a las calles para manifestarse contra el decreto que, entre otras medidas, eliminaba el subsidio al combustible. Esta política económica alteraría las formas de vida de los sectores menos privilegiados. Por estas razones, las comunidades indígenas que también son las más empobrecidas, junto con otros sectores sociales como el transporte, los trabajadores y los estudiantes. Protestaron durante 13 días en las calles.

Para el 4 del día, se estableció una congregación de varias comunidades en el emblemático Parque Arbolito. Los enfrentamientos entre la policía y los manifestantes, el saqueo en algunos sectores del país y el enfrentamiento de toda la sociedad, sumieron al país en una gran incertidumbre que concluyó con la derogación del decreto. Las protestas que dejaron 11 muertos y un gran descontento social.

Esta fue una demostración en la cual las mujeres y la comunidad tomaron un papel muy importante. Para mí, era esencial entender esta protesta no solo desde la línea de batalla sino desde la fuerza interna de quienes ejercen su derecho legítimo a protestar.
